Laminated Glass
The laminated glass consists of two or more glass plates held by one or more interlayers of elastic and very durable film typically EVA - Ethylene Vinyl Acetate or PVB - Polyvinyl Butyral. Various types of glass can be laminated together and there exist not only transparent but also opaque and colorful interlayers. This creates a wide variety of options for the application of laminated glass for the exterior and interior.
The laminated glass is mostly used for its safety and noise cancellation properties.
The interlayers hold the plates of glass together even when the glass is broken insuring that no person or object can go/fall through. Combining certain number of glass pieces with certain number of interlayers can achieve characteristics such as burglar and bullet resistance.
Another useful property of the laminated glass is its high noise reduction capability, which makes it a perfect component in an insulating glass unit.
A "disadvantage” of the regular laminated glass is its strength, which can be roughly assumed to be about 60% of the strength of the total unit. For example, if there are 5 mm glass pieces laminated together, the laminated glass will be as strong as a 6 mm monolithic glass. This is easily overcome by lamination of tempered glass, which combines the strength of the tempered glass and the safely of the laminated glass.
